Issues
Your right to know
Technology will be key to the future of Linn County in today’s complex and changing times, and I intend to use it to promote more open and accessible government. Promoting opportunities for effective and efficient government will become more significant as reduced revenues and budgetary challenges face all aspects of government.

Linda on Taxes
I believe that keeping taxes down, while providing the broadest possible range of services is important to all citizens. Understanding the needs of senior citizens and those who are served by mental health care services must be high on the list of all our government leaders. A significant portion of Linn County’s budget addresses mental health services. Elected officials must understand how these funds are allocated by the state, as well as how to best utilize these funds to provide optimum services.

Communication
I will always be open to the community, to listen to the needs and concerns of Linn County’s residents. I promise, that when elected, I will continue to visit all areas of the county to understand the issues that are significant to the diverse population of Linn County. I will work to promote a better understanding of Linn County government so that all voices may be heard. I believe that Linn County is a great community because great people live here. I intend to serve as a leader who promotes Linn County with an eye to the future, an understanding of the past and an appreciation of what we can all do working together.

Alternatives to Landfill

The next important phase in managing our solid waste will be to explore all the viable alternatives to landfilling. I continue to visit with people attempting to deploy newer technologies. Several mass burn alternatives are presently visiting and exploring our community. I am carefully watching all the information related to plasma arc technology. Send me any information you come across related to this subject.

Highway 100

A great deal of progress has been made on this issue. The Iowa Department of Transportation has completed all environmental studies. A record of decision is due to be signed by FHWA soon which will allow progress to begin. The Conservation Board is willing to work with the IDOT upon the completion of environmental studies to pursue the best alternatives. I continue to be active in getting funding in place for this significant transportation project.

Economic Development

Jobs will continue to be an important part of driving our local economy. I will continue to work with local businesses to provide them with the best possible environment for development and expansion. Linn County continues to support Priority One in their efforts towards economic development. I served as a campaign leader in the completion of the 2010 campaign. My relationship with Cedar Rapids, Marion, Hiawatha, Robins and other Linn County city officials is excellent and helps us all benefit working with business to bring more jobs to the area.

Property Tax Reform

Reforming property tax to benefit all of Linn County and Iowa will continue to take cooperative efforts on the part of local government and the legislature. My relationships with other local government officials and state legislators will assist in developing the systems and the understanding of how to best undertake this vital issue. In order to have the best public services we must make effective use of tax dollars.

Keeping seniors independent and in their homes for as long as possible is very important. Linn County’s commitment to the Frail Elderly program will remain intact. We will work with seniors and legislators to advance this and other issues such as the maintenance and expansion of the Senior Living Trust.

Social Services

Our community must continue to provide excellent services to those who need it the most. Our ability to have a vibrant and diverse community is crucial and providing services for those who need additional assistance in their daily life is just one aspect of supporting diversity.

Health Care

Health Care will be an ever increasing important issue that will affect people and government in the coming years. I was active in seeking federal funds for a community health center for Linn County that allows us to address the burgeoning health care needs of Linn County. I serve on the 15 in 5 Committee for Access to Health Care and at the national level I serve as member of the Health Steering Committee and Vice Chair of the Health Disparities Committee for the National Association of Counties. These activities keep me active with federal and state legislators in bringing affordable health care to everyone.

Diversity

Linn County has the potential to be at the top of many lists. I know this is a great place to live, work, play and raise a family. By providing support for programs through the Witwer Trust Fund and Historic Preservation Fund we can continue to advance those things that make Linn County be such a great place to live work and play. I will continue to make every effort to support diversity and creativity in our community.

Leadership and Listening

Leadership requires making tough decisions on difficult issues. It also means taking the time to listen to people, understand their concerns, and seeking out diverse ideas and opinions. I promise that I will continue to listen to ALL of Linn County and make time for my constituents. I will provide the leadership that is necessary to keep Linn County a growing and vital place.
